Academic Interests

Anette Bringedal Houge’s PhD project on conflict-related sexual violence focuses on how law is used to narrate, explain, and manage such violence. It is a project that focuses particularly on how defendants – and perpetrators – are talked into being for the sake of and by criminal courts, and what this juridification of a particular social phenomenon entails for our understanding of that phenomenon. The project offers an analysis of the situated knowledge international criminal justice generates and enables, constrains and silences about collective crimes

Houge’s academic interests pertains primarily to international/supranational criminology and criminal justice, and includes peace and conflict studies, narrative criminology, violence in general, and politically motivated and sexual violence in particular, gender and masculinities.  Houge has published in journals such as British Journal of Criminology, Law and Society Review, and Aggression and Violent Behavior. Houge was a visiting researcher at the International Institute for the Sociology of Law in Oñati, spring 2015 and spring 2016, and is also member of the steering committee for the Network for research on rape and sexual violence.

For the fall semester 2017, Houge works on three projects pertaining to the continuum between conflict-related sexual violence and post-conflict intimate partner violence; the individualization of guilt in international criminal justice and international criminal justice institutions’ role as producers and managers of historical records; and the influence of bystanders in processes of political radicalization. In extention of the latter, Houge is also associated with the project Jihadi subculture and street culture at the Department.

Houge has developed and teaches the following courses:
