Background

Dr. juris Christina Voigt is professor at the Department of Public and International Law, University of Oslo, Norway.

Professor Voigt is an expert in international environmental law. She works in particular on legal issues of climate change, environmental multilateralism and sustainability. 

She received her legal education at the University of Passau in Germany, holds a Master of Laws in Environmental Law (LL.M.-Envir) from the University of Auckland, New Zealand (2002), and received her Doctorate in law from the University of Oslo in 2007 on a dissertation titled “Sustainable Development as a Principle of Integration in International Law – Resolving Potential Conflicts between WTO Law and Climate Change Mitigation Measures” (2009, Martinus Nijhoff Publishers). In 2009, she was awarded the first IUCN Academy of Environmental Law Junior Scholarship Prize. 

Since 2009, she has also been working for the Norwegian government as lead negotiator on REDD+ (Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries) and as principal legal advisor in the UN climate negotiations; negotiating inter alia the Paris Agreement. 

She is currently on the Steering Committee of "The Legitimate Roles of the Judiciary in the Global Order" (Pluricourts) research project, awarded Centre of Excellence status, where she is project coordinator for global public goods. She is Chair of the research group "International Law and Governance" and a founding member of the research group on ‘Natural Resources Law’ and ‘International Relations’. Professor Voigt was Vice Dean of International Affairs at the Faculty of Law and member of the Law Faculty’s Board for Researcher Education (PFF) from 2011-2016.

Professor Voigt is a member of the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law (WCEL), member of the IUCN Task Force on Climate Change and the chair of the IUCN WCEL´s Specialist Group on Climate Change.

Professor Voigt is vice-Chair of the Norwegian branch of the International Law Association. She is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Human Rights and the Environment and Resource Management Theory & Practice as well as member of the Global Network for the Study of Human Rights and the Environment.

She has two little sons and enjoys outdoor activities with her family, such as sailing, hiking and skiing.
