Background

Svein Eng was born in Oslo, Norway, in 1955. In the years 1974–1982 he did university studies both in philosophy and in law, and he was awarded a degree in law (cand. jur.) at the University of Oslo in 1982. In the period 1982-1985, he held positions as a legal advisor in the Ministry of Justice and as a deputy judge. He returned to the University of Oslo in 1985, first as a research fellow (1985–1990), then as a lecturer in law (1991–1996). He was awarded a doctorate in law (dr. juris) in 1996, with a dissertation in legal philosophy (Norwegian edition 1998: U/enighetsanalyse – med særlig sikte på jus og allmenn rettsteori; English edition 2003: Analysis of Dis/agreement – with particular reference to Law and Legal Theory). In 1997, he was appointed Professor of the Philosophy of Law, marking the first appointment of an individual to a professorship in this field in the entire history of the University of Oslo.
