The Politics of Judicial Independence and Judicial Accountability

Book or special issue edited by PluriCourts Directors Geir Ulfstein and Andreas Føllesdal and David Kosar (Masaryk University).

Judicial independence appears on most lists of principles of the rule of law. It is guaranteed by all major international human rights treaties and by most national constitutions. In contrast, we can hardly find any list of the rule-of-law principles that contains judicial accountability. There are calls for greater judicial autonomy as well as for more accountability. The project explores the political vectors behind the measures adopted in order to enhance judicial accountability, and the impact of these novelties on judicial Independence.
