Areas of Work

The Indonesia Programme focuses on activities within the following fields of work:

Administration of Justice

Since its beginning, the Programme has focused on the condition of the Indonesian judiciary. A competent and transparent judiciary is vital to an effective realisation of human rights.

Economic, Social and Cultural Rights

Poverty still remains a major concern in Indonesia. The government ratified the covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural rights in 2006. The Indonesia programme aims to strenghten ESC-rights through capacity building at local and national level.

The Role and Conduct of the Military

The Role and Conduct of the Military is an important component in the Indonesia Programme’s portfolio. Focusing on the Army, the Indonesia Programme seeks to provide substantial inputs on human rights and related issues, particularly the law of armed conflict to the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) through trainings and other capacity building activities.

Freedom of Religion or Belief

Freedom of religion or belief is another focus area of the Indonesia Programme. Issues such as Islamic law and human rights; religious leader’s attitudes towards human rights; and the challenges faced by minority religions and religious communities has been explored through education, research and publications.

Human Rights Education in Institutions of Higher Learning

In cooperation with Indonesian universities, the Indonesia Programme convenes activities aimed at improving the quality of human rights education in Indonesia.

Seminars in Norway

The Indonesia Programme regularly organises seminars in Norway on current topics related to the human rights situation in Indonesia.
