Poverty remains a major concern in Indonesia. The Indonesian government ratified the covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural rights in 2006. The Indonesia programme aims to strenghten ESC-rights through capacity building at local and national level. So far, the main partners so have been the Indonesian National Commission for Human Rights, and the NGO the Ecosoc Institute.
Throughout 2011, previous workshop participants collected data on the human rights impact of manganese mining at selected locations in three regencies located in East Nust Tenggara province - TTU, Belu and Kupang. These regencies have seen a rapid increase in manganese mining in recent years.
A training in data collection for human rights investigations related to economic, social and cultural rights, was held in Kupang in June 2011.
In late September and early October, a training was held for a group of jounalists from East Nusa Tenggara province (NTT).
In July, a 5-day training in economic, social and cultural rights was held for a group of religious leaders in East Nusa Tenggara province (NTT).
In 2008 and 2009 the Institute for Ecosoc Rights and the Indonesia Programme conducted a series of trainings on economic, social and cultural (ESC) rights, government budgeting for the realisation of these rights and advocacy techniques. These trainings targeted indigenous communities, leaders, and NGOs from a number of districts in East Nusa Tenggara.
