Human Rights Education
In cooperation with Indonesian universities, in particular the Centre for Human Rights Studies at the Indonesian Islamic University (Pusham UII) Yogyakarta, the Indonesia Programme conducts activities aiming at improving the quality of human rights education in Indonesia.
The participants came from various universities across Indonesia, and had all attended a basic human rights training in Makassar in 2010.
Two basic trainings in human rights where held in Yogyakarta (26 to 29 September) and Surabaya (10 to 13 October).
In September 2010, a five-day mediation training was held for the Indonesian National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM). One of Komnas HAM's mandated functions is to act as a mediator in relation to human rights disputes and violations.
In June 2010 a two-day workshop was held in Yogyakarta. Its aim was to organise the writing of a human rights textbook focusing on vulnerable groups.
A two day workshop was held in Yogyakarta in June, targeting 40 law faculty deans from all parts of Indonesia.
A human rights textbook for law students at the undergraduate level was launched in Indonesia in April 2008, in cooperation with he Centre for Human Rights Studies at the Indonesian Islamic University (PUSHAM UII) in Yogyakarta. In 2010 preperations has started for another textbook. This book's focus will be human rights and vulnerable groups.
Between 2003 and 2009, human rights trainings have been provided to a select number of human rights lecturers throughout Indonesia on general and specialised areas of human rights, in cooperation with the Centre for Human Rights Studies at the Islamic University of Indonesia (PUSHAM UII).
In 2010, a new set of trainings began, targeting a new group of law lecturers.
Since 2006, the Indonesia Programme has invited Indonesian guest researchers to NCHR on an annual basis. These visits from Indonesian researchers contribute to strengthen the academic cooperation between NCHR and Indonesian institutions of higher learning.
Every second year two scholarships for the Master's programme The Theory and Practice of Human Rights at NCHR are available to Indonesian applicants. The Master's degree is a two year programme with admissions every second year.
In September 2008, Pusham UII launched a human rights book for high school teachers that had been prepared and drafted over the previous 9 months with support from the Indonesia Programme. High school teachers are now required to teach human rights as part of the national high school curriculum.
In 2007 and 2009, NCHR organised a five-day course on human rights. This course will be arranged again in 2010.
Since 2004, the Indonesia Programme has provided book packages to selected human right study centres at Indonesian universities.
