Background

Born 1976, cand.jur. (Norwegian law degree) University of Oslo 2002, Ph.D. University of Oslo 2010. Professor of Law from 15 September 2012. Ph.D. candidate from 2006, Research Fellow from 2010, Associate Professor from 2011.

Before moving to the University, I worked in the Ministry of Justice's Legislation Department (2003-2006) and with the Norwegian Parliamentary Ombudsman (2002-2003). I was Secretary for the committee that prepared a new Administration of Estates Act ("Skiftelovutvalget"), 2005-2007. I was a member in the Council of Europe's Working Party on Missing Persons (under CJ-FA) 2008-2009. Norwegian editor in the Nordic journal "Retfærd", and member of the Editorial Board of the Forum for International Criminal and Humanitarian Law. Visiting Fellow at the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law, University of Cambridge, in 2009.

Representative for permanent academic staff in the NCHR Board 2012-2014. Chair of the NCHR's thematic working group (TAG) on human rights and conflict.

Research areas

I defended my Ph.D. thesis on 20 October 2010. The title of the thesis was "The European Convention on Human Rights and UN-Mandated Peace Operations: A Square Peg in a Round Hole?". The thesis was later published as the book "The Human Rights Treaty Obligations of Peacekeepers" (Cambridge University Press, 2012).

My research areas include international human rights law (particularly human rights in conflicts), international humanitarian law, and general international law (particularly the responsibility of international organizations). Ongoing research projects address primarily 1) the application of human rights law in peace operations, and 2) missing and disappeared persons.

I have the academic responsibility for international humanitarian law at the Faculty of Law. I'm also in charge of the MA level courses HUMR5140 Introduction to Human Rights Law and HUMR5132 Human Rights Law in Context.
