“For the purposes of the present Convention, the term "discrimination against women" shall mean any distinction, exclusion or restriction made on the basis of sex which has the effect or purpose of impairing or nullifying the recognition, enjoyment or exercise by women, irrespective of their marital status, on a basis of equality of men and women, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural, civil or any other field.”

“All persons are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to the equal protection of the law. In this respect, the law shall prohibit any discrimination and guarantee to all persons equal and effective protection against discrimination on any ground such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.”

Equality and non-discrimination principles are present in the International Bill of Rights that comprises the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR).

Victoria Sandino, leader of the gender commission from FARC-EP visited NCHR today to present and discuss the challenges and the achievements of including gender in the peace talks following 50 years of armed conflict in Colombia. She is in Oslo as FARC attend the Foreign Ministry's Peace Forum this week.

On December 27, 2015, the 18th meeting of the 12th session of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress examined and approved the Anti-Domestic Violence Law of the People's Republic of China. The law came into effect on March 1, 2016. For more than a decade, the NCHR had supported the Domestic Violence Network that worked to pass the law and to fight against domestic violence in China.
