With Sustainable Markets Actors to a Centre of Excellence for Corporate Sustainability

Presentation by Beate Sjåfjell, Department of Private Law.

This event is open for everyone, including students.

Beate Sjåfjell will present the project Sustainable Market Actors for Responsible Trade (SMART) and the ongoing work with an application for a Centre of Excellence. SMART builds on and develops further the findings of the Sustainable Companies Project. The thematic scope of SMART centres on products originating wholly or in part in developing countries and sold by businesses in the EU to consumers and procurers in the EU. Compared to the Sustainable Companies Project, SMART will broaden the scope of the analysis to include the social dimension of sustainability as well as the environmental, and focuses more broadly on business, investors and consumers as well as the public market actor in its many roles.

A successful funding application was submitted to the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020 in May 2015, under the programme INT-4-2015 ‘Europe as a Global Actor: in search of greater policy coherence for development’, and the project is currently in the grant agreement negotiation phase. SMART will be the planned Centre of Excellence’s first externally financed project. The planned Centre of Excellence has the current working name: Centre for Systemic Corporate Sustainability.
