Seminar with Klentiana Mahmutaj, independent expert on the Expert Mechanism on the Right to Development at the United Nations Human Rights Council. Klentiana Mahmutaj will share her experiences and provide insights into the work of the Expert Mechanism on the Right to Development.

During the seminar, Klentiana Mahmutaj will share her experiences and work with the Expert Mechanism on the Right to Development, where she serves as chair. The seminar will provide insight into what it means to be part of the Expert Mechanism on the Right to Development in the midst of a pandemic, the practical difficulties encountered, vaccine nationalism as well as future work in supporting and monitoring the emergence of a Pandemic Treaty. 

About the speaker:

Klentiana Mahmutaj is barrister in the United Kingdom and an independent expert on the Expert Mechanism on the Right to Development at the United Nations Human Rights Council, a mandate which she has held since 1 May 2020.

In her role as counsel, her practice includes white-collar crime, human rights and international arbitration, with a focus on investment treaty arbitration. Klentiana also has substantial public inquiry experience and is currently instructed for one of the core participants in the Undercover Policing Inquiry, one of the largest public inquiries in British history.

Klentiana is an experienced treaty negotiator, having negotiated in October 2018, on behalf of the Albanian government, a draft treaty on business and human rights at the United Nations Human Rights Council.

She is the author of a book on the doctrine of humanitarian intervention and NATO’s intervention in Kosovo and has published several articles on human rights and international law.

Before coming to the Bar, she worked as a project worker with British Red Cross and as a radio presenter with BBC World Service, Albanian Section.
