Ethiopia's Engagement with International Human Rights Law and Its Implications for the Transitional Justice Process

Mekonnen Fisseha Gebiremichael, Doctoral Research Fellow at The Norwegian Centre for Human Rights, will be presenting to what extent does Ethiopia’s engagement with international human rights law shape its transitional justice process.

Ethiopia is a party to numerous international human rights instruments and has incorporated human rights provisions into its constitution. However, it has historically maintained a poor human rights record. Additionally, Ethiopia has not ratified many key international monitoring mechanisms, including several optional protocols. This paper seeks to investigate the extent to which Ethiopia can effectively address human rights violations through the transitional justice framework. The overarching question guiding this paper is: to what extent does Ethiopia’s prior engagement with international human rights law influence its transitional justice process?
