Abstract
The European Green Deal (EGD) marks a significant shift in the regulation of global value chains, presenting profound challenges and opportunities for legal and interdisciplinary research. By redefining the regulatory landscape, the EGD necessitates a reexamination of research methodologies and the development of innovative tools to address the intricate dynamics of public and private regulation, technology, and infrastructure. This paper builds on discussions from the EUI Workshop “Unpacking the European Green Deal: redefining approaches, shifting methodologies,” focusing on the EGD's methodological implications for global value chains (GVCs). The increasing integration of private regulation, data-driven systems, and digital infrastructures underscores the need for interdisciplinary approaches. The paper first highlights the central role of GVCs in the EGD, then analyzes evolving regulatory frameworks and the transformation of legal concepts. It concludes by proposing new methodologies to study these changes and reflecting on their broader impact on regulatory practices.
