Jus Cogens in Theory and Practice: The Case of Russian Aggression

The Research Group on International Law is delighted to invite you to an engaging lecture featuring Izolda Takacs, a scholar of International Law and a visiting researcher at the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights (NCHR). In this seminar, she will explore the tensions between the theory and practice of jus cogens, focusing on the legal challenges posed by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

Izolda Takacs will present key findings from the International Law Commission’s 2022 Draft Conclusions on Peremptory Norms of General International Law (jus cogens), addressing unresolved legal questions surrounding jurisdiction, immunity, and accountability.

Through an analysis of international case law, the seminar will examine how Russian aggression challenges the enforcement of jus cogens norms and raises urgent questions about the future of international law. The discussion will also consider proposals for a Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression and the broader implications for Article 2(4) of the UN Charter.

Join us for a thought-provoking discussion on the limits and possibilities of international law in times of crisis.
