Through our newsletter series, we give you information about exciting events, new publications and dissemination of our research. In this newsletter, we highlight exciting upcoming events organised by the two academic networks we coordinate: Sustainable Market Actors Research Network (SMART), and Daughters of Themis: International Network of Women Business Scholars. We also highlight our own events, including our annual Sustainability Law PhD Seminar 2025 and our Sustainability Law Week 2026, with a Sustainability Slam and our grand Sustainability Law conference! Also, read on to find out what’s up with our Sustainability Law electives!
SMART Network Symposium: Sustainability is (Still) Possible!
Join us in the first SMART Network Symposium, in Turin, Italy, 18-19 September 2025! The ongoing pushback against sustainability-oriented legislation makes the SMART Network as urgent and important as ever. Denial of risks of unsustainability and the comforting illusion of business-as-usual is driving humanity onwards on a very certain path towards a very uncertain future. Sustainability Law supports the Steering Committee of the SMART Network in its reiteration of SMART’s mission statement that sustainability is possible. In this critical moment for corporate sustainability, the Symposium aims at establishing connections between existing members and welcoming new friends and colleagues interested in sustainability-oriented research.
The Symposium is open to all, and digital participation is possible if you cannot travel to Turin. Would you like to have a chance to present your research at the SMART Network Symposium? The call for papers is open until 10 April – so don’t miss out on this opportunity!
Daughters of Themis celebrates its first ten years!
Daughters of Themis: International Network of Women Business Scholars, was founded in 2015, and has continued to grow and flourish over its first decade. Its second Quinquennial Conference will be held in Brazil, 12-13 November 2025. The theme is Learning from each other: Critical and constructive dialogues on business, sustainability and diversity, and the conference is open to all!
The conference will showcase research from its members, and the call for papers is open until 13 April. The call is for all members of Daughters of Themis – and new members are welcome to join!
Sustainability Law events in 2025 and 2026
In addition to our Sustainability Law Seminar Series, we are happy to announce:
The Sustainability Law PhD Seminar 2025 will be held in Oslo 13-17 October 2025. We will dedicate this full-week, hybrid seminar with exciting lectures and PhD presentations, to hope for achieving sustainability. The seminar will include the Oslo launch of Marija Bartl’s monograph ‘Reimagining Prosperity. Toward a New Imaginary of Law and Political Economy in the EU’. Hold the dates! More information to follow later this spring.
In 2026, we will have a full Sustainability Law Week. The week will start with two PhD days 14-15 September 2026, with a Sustainability Slam event on the evening of 15 September, and then we will have our major Sustainability Law Conference 16-18 September 2026. Hold the dates! Call for papers for the conference to be announced over the next weeks.
Sustainability Law electives
Sustainability Law is thrilled to see the great interest students and scholars are showing in our electives Sustainable Business, Finance & Circular Economy (every autumn semester) and Corporate Sustainability Law (every spring semester). These electives are available both on the bachelor and master level, and this term, Corporate Sustainability Law was in the first cohort of sustainability-oriented modules in the European University Alliance Circle U. Check out the blog post by Dean of Open Campus in Circle U, Eivind Engebretsen, about this successful cohort!
What the Actual…?
We love European Law Open’s marketing of this recent publication by two of our members, Beate Sjåfjell and Sarah Cornell! On publishing the article ‘What the Actual…? Tensions in the science–business–policy interface for global sustainability’, the journal wrote on Bluesky:
It was suggested to us that the title is 'inappropriate.' We don't think so, and neither will you after reading this by @beatesjafjell.bsky.social and Sarah Cornell
On X, the journal was even more explicit:
On First View: @BeateSjafjell and @SarahLizCornell in a wtaf moment that will not pass anytime soon.
Would you like to know what the actual… provoked the authors to use this title, and the editors of European Law Open to accept and support it? Read the open access article here, and share with Sustainability Law, for example on LinkedIn, what you think!
