Nils Christie has passed away

It is with great sorrow we have learned the very sad news that Nils Christie suddenly passed away on Wednesday 27 May.

Nils Christie was born 24. February 1928. After the WWII, he worked for a period as journalist before entering academia in 1946. He completed his doctorate degree in 1959 and became Norway’s first professor of criminology in 1966 at the University of Oslo.

During his time as professor he took part in establishing Norwegian and Scandinavian criminology, and made it internationally renowned.

Christie was one of Norway’s foremost social scientists. He published 15 books which has been translated into more than 20 languages.

For more than half a century, Christie was not only a leading intellectual figure in criminology, but also an active participant in public discourse.

He will be deeply missed.
