Academic interests

John’s PHD project is entitled Unpacking the Norwegian desistance model: discourses, practices and experiences.  This study takes as it starting point the political and media discourse (specifically government ministers and newspaper editorials) around rehabilitation and desistance. Given the aim of ‘unpacking’ the Norwegian desistance model, this study will use the UK as a comparator. Comparing how desistance and rehabilitation issues are framed in Norway and the UK in terms of key similarities and differences will provide a benchmark and a framework for analysing desistance practice and experiences. The key issues in terms of similarities and differences will be ‘followed down’ through analysing their expression in both Norwegian justice-system practice and Norwegian desister experience.  The proposed research questions for the study are:

  • How does the political and media discourse in Norway and the UK frame the topics of desistance and rehabilitation? What are the key issues in terms of similarities and differences?
  • How are these issues reflected in criminal justice system practice, both in official documentation and in the perspectives of practitioners themselves?
  • How do those seeking to desist from crime narrate and experience the desistance process as informed by the identified issues?

In addition to desistance, John’s research interests include populism and Euroscepticism, poststructuralist discourse analysis and securitisation theory.

John holds a Master’s degree in International Relations from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences and a Postgraduate Diploma in Management from the Chartered Management Institute.  He has worked in a range of policy roles within the civil service in Belfast and London, including as Head of Reducing Offending Unit in the Department of Justice, Northern Ireland and as Head of Parliamentary and International Liaison for the Northern Ireland Office.
