Permanent maritime delimitation under UNCLOS through conciliation: the Australia/Timor Leste experience
Professor Tina Hunter, University of Aberdeen, will give a seminar on the topic.
This seminar will consider the historic permanent delimitation of the maritime boundary between Australia and Timor Leste. The agreement is doubly historic because not only does it permanently delimit the troubled boundary between Australia and its neighbour, which has been contentious for over 50 years, but also because it is the first permanent delimitation to be concluded by conciliation under A298 and Annex V of UNCLOS. as part of the consideration of the delimitation, Professor Hunter will consider the historical origins of the dispute, its history, the outcome of the conciliation, and the ramifications of the delimitation for both Timor Leste and Australia.
