Women Are Underrepresented in International Courts and Tribunals

PluriCourts supports the GQUAL campaign, which promotes gender parity in international courts and tribunals. A recent survey reveals that 32,5% of all members of international tribunals and monitoring bodies are women. Taking only into account courts, the proportion of women decreases to 17,6%.

GQUAL studies the nomination and selection processes for posts in international courts and tribunals. An objective is to help change the norms, guidelines, and practices that regulate the nomination and voting processes so as to increase the proportion of women judges.

PluriCourts coordinator Cecilia Bailliet spoke at the launch of the GQUAL campaign. View the United Nations webcast.
