IS soldiers as victims of war crimes
Postdoctoral Fellow Joanna Nicholson has written an opinion piece in Klassekampen on IS soldiers as victims of war crimes.
In the text, published in the paper version of Klassekampen 13. March 2019, Nicholson uses an example from Sweden, where a former Iraqi soldier was convicted of war crimes against dead IS soldiers in Iraq. His attacks on the dead soldiers are not an isolated incident - online there are several photos and videos showing war crimes committed against IS soldiers held in custody.
Nicholson argues that all soldiers are protected by international law, despite their behavior. Keeping this in mind when faced with atrocities committed by IS can be difficult, but it is important not to lower our standards and to show that everyone is equal before the law.
