In the recent Belgium v. Senegal case, the International Court of Justice described the prohibition of torture as a norm of customary international law. There are similar pronouncements by other tribunals. But aside from the prohibition of torture, there is very little case law or academic literature that enables the identification of the body of human rights norms that constitute customary international law.

The lecture will discuss how the concept of customary international law in the area of human rights has developed and consider the content of this body of law.
