Seminar with Manfred Nowak and the Global Campus of Human Rights

The Norwegian Centre for Human Rights welcomes you to a seminar on the prohibition against torture and the work of the Global Campus of Human Rights.

About the Seminar:

During this seminar, Manfred Nowak will share insights from his past experience and work as a UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (2004-2010). He will be joined by Imke Steimann and Elisa Klein Díaz, who will present on human rights education and the work of the Global Campus of Human Rights.

The Global Campus of Human Rights is an inter-disciplinary centre of excellence supported by the European Union. It strives to promote human rights and democratisation through higher education, specialised training programmes, research and outreach. It does so through a broad network of member universities in seven regions of the world: Africa, Arab World, Asia-Pacific, Caucasus, Europe, Latin America and Caribbean, South East Europe. Its regional headquarters in Pretoria, Beirut, Bangkok, Yerevan, Buenos Aires, Sarajevo/Bologna, and are coordinated by its main office in Venice, Italy.

About the Speakers:

  • Manfred Nowak is the Secretary General of the Global Campus of Human Rights in Venice, Professor of International Human Rights at Vienna University and Director of the Vienna Master of Arts in Human Rights. He previously served in various expert functions, such as UN Expert on enforced disappearances (1993-2006), UN Special Rapporteur on Torture (2004-2010), judge at the Human Rights Chamber for Bosnia and Herzegovina (1996-2003) and Vice- Chairperson of the EU Fundamental Rights Agency (2013-2018). In 2016 he was appointed Independent Expert leading the UN Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty. He was Director of the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights at Utrecht University (SIM, 1987-1989) and of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights at Vienna University (BIM, 1992-2019) as well as Visiting Professor at the University of Lund ( 2002-2003), the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva (2008-2009), and at Stanford University in Palo Alto (2014). He is the author of more than 600 publications in the fields of public international law and human rights.
  • Imke Steimann is the Personal Assistant to the Secretary General of the Global Campus of Human Rights. Prior to joining the Global Campus in 2020, Imke worked as Project Assistant at the Munich Security Conference, and interned at the German Mission to the United Nations in New York and at the London-based NGO Child Soldiers International. Imke graduated from a Human Rights Master's Program at the University of Vienna where she focused on children's rights and armed conflict. 

  • Elisa Klein Díaz is a Global Study Program Support Officer at the Global Campus of Human Rights, where she contributes to the dissemination and follow-up initiation activities to the Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty. Elisa has worked in the Press and Communications Department of the Austrian Ombudsman Board and as a consultant at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Human Rights. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in International Relations and a Master of Arts in Human Rights.
