Human Rights and Peace Education Programme for Universities in ASEAN formally acknowledged
ASEAN Education Ministers Meeting (ASED) has formally acknowledge a human rights and peace education programme aimed at higher education institutions in ASEAN.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations' (ASEAN) University Network (AUN-HRE) is one of the two partners of SHAPE SEA, who has been entrusted to develop a full project proposal for this programme. NCHR har supported SHAPE-SEA since 2015.
AUN-HRE is an academic collaboration network composed of more than 30 universities in Southeast Asia aiming to promote education and research on human rights in Southeast Asia.
Harmonising a human rights and peace education programme
On behalf on the AUN, the ASEAN Secretariat presented a concept note that aims to harmonise a sustainable programme of promoting human rights and peace education in ASEAN - targeting higher education institutions. The Meeting noted that the concept note was based upon recommendations put forth by the AUN Human Rights Education Network.
Key activities planned under this project include a conference on Human Rights and Peace Education, a two-day workshop, and developing/updating existing teaching materials on the fundamentals of human rights and peace. The latter is based on a report studying the status of human rights and peace education in ASEAN by the AUN-HRE.
Developing a project proposal
The Meeting further endorsed the development of the concept note into a full project proposal in consultation with related ASEAN bodies/entities, such as the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (ASEAN-IPR), and the forthcoming Working Group on Culture of Prevention.
