The South Africa Programme

Between 1998 and 2010, the South Africa Programme (coordinated by NCHR and financed by the Norwegian Embassy, Pretoria) supported numerous organisations working to strengthen human rights and democracy across South Africa and the region.

The final Programme report covers the achievements of the last 5 years of the Programme (2005-2010), discernable outputs and impacts, while describing ongoing challenges.

Some of the main achievements include court victories on land and housing rights, development of new laws on women's rights, provision of legal services for persons living with HIV/AIDS and increased social activism and democratic participation.

The report also notes various challenges including maximimsing the benefits of litigation strategies, creating better connections between different civil society actors and enhancing the level of impact within the policy-making sphere.
