Oslo Coalition's second book in the series on new directions in Islam is now released. The book Gender and Equality in Muslim Family Law: Justice and Ethics in the Islamic Legal Tradition was launched with a panel discussion and reception at SOAS in London on April 27, 2013, in cooperation with the Centre of Middle Eastern and Islamic Law (CIMEL).

Observers from the NORDEM roster have established a network for Norwegian election observers. The network will facilitate exchange of experiences and information between election observers in Norway and will arrange seminars on election related topics. The network is independent from NORDEM but will cooperate with NORDEM on events and seminars.

On the occasion of the 20 year anniversary, NORDEM has launched a report which provides insight into the establishment in 1993, NORDEM’s role and impact over the years, feature stories from current and past NORDEM missions and activities, and interviews with key partners and NORDEM members.

According to the OSCE preliminary statement, the Presidential election in Tajikistan took place peacefully, but restrictive candidacy requirement, a formalistic and largely indiscernible campaign resulted in a lack of a real choice and meaningful pluralism.

The 27 October presidential elections in Georgia was efficiently administered, transparent and took place in an amicable and constructive environment.
Procedures were largely followed and international observers noted a high level of transparency throughout the day.
However, several provisions of the Election Code remain unclear and were not applied in a consistent manner, states the OSCE preliminary findings.

National and central election commissions from around the world participated in NORDEMs study programme to the Norwegian Parliamentary Elections 2013.
One of the objectives of the one week long study programme was to enable the participants to make their own assessment of the Norwegian electoral process and come up with recommendations for improvement.

From 16-20 September, 25 participants from the NORDEM roster, the OSCE, the CIMIC Centre of Excellence (CCOE) and the Folke Bernadotte Academy, participated in a week-long training at Hadeland outside Oslo. The group dealt with topics such as human rights based field work, democratization and governance, international humanitarian law, gender mainstreaming, security awareness and stress and critical incident management.

This is the first time NORDEM attends this important meeting that brings together all the major organizations that work within the field of election observation. NORDEM attends in an observer capacity.
The meeting is hosted by OSCE/ODIHR and takes place i Warsaw from 17-19th September.

NORDEM has hosted four international delegations of election officials from Turkmenistan, Irak, Nigeria and Zimbabwe, who came to study and assess the Norwegian parliamentary elections on 9 September. A representative of the OSCE Centre in Ashgabad, who supported the visit, stated that “The visit will have an added value in light of the upcoming parliamentary elections in Turkmenistan.”

From 15-23 August a seminar on human rights law teaching at Chinese universities, organized by the China Programme in cooperation with China University of Political Science and Law, was held in Beijing for 45 Chinese law teachers.

Langaker embarked on his NORDEM assignment as Junior Professional Officer (JPO) in the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in April this year. He spent the first three months of the JPO-program in the OSCE Headquarter in Vienna working in the Transnational Threats Department before he left for Kyrgyzstan in July to assist the OSCE Centre in Bishkek with implementing its Police Reform Programme (PRP).
