The one day training aimed to prepare the participants for assignments as short-term election observer in an international election observation mission, by providing them with the tools and knowledge necessary to understand the short term observer’s role.

Course outcome

Among the topics of the course were international standards for election observation, the International Declaration of Principles, the recognized international standards for elections, short-term observation methodology and the code of conduct for election observers. Through interactive exercises the participants were challenged with different situations and dilemmas that might occur during a mission as an election observer.

The new members have been recruited through a thorough screening process in order to become a part of the NORDEM roster of election observers. In addition to the NORDEM Introductory course, the new observers are obligated to complete the OSSE/ODIHRs Online Comprehensive Training in Election Observation before being drafted to their first mission.

NORDEM deployes international election observers to international missions conducted by the OSCE/ODIHR, the EU or The Carter Center.
