Workshop: Critical Perspectives on Blasphemy and Apostasy

The first in a series of international workshops addressing the freedoms of religion and expression from within the Islamic tradition was held at Lysebu, Oslo, on January 11–13, 2013.

The ten invited Muslim experts included the head of the Islamic Resarch Institute in Islamabad; a leading Iranian reformist intellectual in exile; and professors at universities in Boston, Leiden, Melbourne, and Yogyakarta.

The speakers gave papers on varied aspects of the theme “Critical Perspectives on Blasphemy and Apostasy in the Islamic Tradition”. Presentations ranged from religious source texts and medieval doctrine to country-specific modern case studies.

Participants also discussed ways to open up a public debate on this sensitive issue both with a broader Muslim audience and with policy-makers.
