About the project
The Sustainable Markets project investigates how the legal framework for markets and innovation can contribute to the realisation of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, including the green transition. The project is led by the research group MIK (Market, Innovation, Competition) at the Department of Private Law.
In an open, modern, and technological market economy, such as in Norway and the EEA, it is up to the market to bring forth new and innovative technology. Competition rules set boundaries for the behaviour of public and private actors in the market to ensure free and unhindered competition, while rules regarding intellectual property rights and innovation are intended to promote the development of innovative products and solutions. The project examines how these rules promote—or can promote—the development of sustainable technology and market outcomes that can help realise the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.
Implementation
The project is implemented by having the research group participate in two Nordic/European research networks (German/Nordic IPR Network and Nordic Academic Network for Competition Law). Collaboration and interdisciplinarity are crucial because legal development in this area is driven by the EU/EEA, and because the new societal challenges related to tackling the UN's Sustainable Development Goals are global. The MIK research group is also active in and runs two national networks (and runs its own activities Forum for Competition Law and MIK Agenda), which contribute to collaboration between national research institutions and the dissemination of research results to Norwegian society, including political decision-makers.
Duration
The project lasts from 2023 to 2027.
Financing
The project is supported by the Research Council of Norway. Project number: 342086.
