Word limit for doctoral degree theses at the Faculty of Law, University of Oslo

A PhD thesis at the Faculty of Law should normally consist of between 100 000 and 150 000 words. For the PhD thesis to be evaluated, it should not consist of more than 200 000 words.

The limit on the maximum Words entered into force for theses delivered from and including 1 August 2009. This was adopted by the Programme Committee for Research Training on 5 March 2008.

What is included

The preface, table of contents, registers, appendices and bibliography are not counted. Footnotes and endnotes are counted. The page limit does not entail any changes in the quality requirements.
