About the Subject
Intellectual Property Law comprises industrial property law, copyright and neighbouring rights. Two courses are offered in Norwegian at advanced master level: Copyright focuses on works of art, i.e. the legal protection for literary, scientific and artistic works, and protection for performing artists, photography etc. Industrial property concerns legal protection for commercial signs, i.e. trade marks, company names, trade names etc., and protection for industrial designs (product designs) and patents on technical inventions.

Research
Research within the Department covers most areas of intellectual property law, and a number of titles have been published in recent years: Opphavsrett (“Copyright”, Ole-Andreas Rognstad 2008), Norsk skribentrett (“Norwegian Authors’ Rights”, Jon Bing et.al. 2006), Patentrett (“Patent Law”, Are Stenvik, 2nd ed. 2006), Oversikt over norsk varemerkerett (“Survey of Norwegian Trade Mark Law”, Birger Stuevold Lassen and Are Stenvik, 2nd rev.ed. 2003) og Designrett (“Design Law”, Birger Stuevold Lassen and Are Stenvik 2006). Researchers in the field of intellectual property law participate in the Research Group Market, Innovation and Competition, and co-operates with colleagues at Norwegian Research Center for Computers and Law (NRCCL) and with intellectual property law researchers in other Nordic countries. A Nordic research network symposium and a moot court competition is arranged every year. Since 2005 a research procject has been conducted in co-operation with the law firm Bugge, Arentz-Hansen & Rasmussen (BA-HR), and the research results have been publishet in the title Aktuell immaterialrett (“Contemporary Intellectual Property Law” 2008).
