About the project

In statsallmenninger (state commons), bygdeallmenninger (village commons), jordsameige (undivided co-ownership), utmarkslag (outfield land associations), bygdelag and bygdesameige (local community co-ownership groups), as well as within the Finnmark Estate (Finnmarkseiendommen), outfield areas are collectively managed to varying degrees. These governance models encompass diverse forms of public, private, and indeterminate ownership, as well as statutory and inalienable arrangements alongside voluntary and declaratory frameworks. The project is founded on the differences between these models.

I examine similarities and differences in ownership, rights, organizational structures, and legal frameworks, and analyze how the various forms of collective governance relate to the underlying conditions.

Goals

  • To describe the characteristics of various governance models and their interrelations within Norwegian outfield management.
  • To examine how different governance models respond to changing patterns of outfield use.
