  Women’s rights advances have historically been associated with left parties in Europe, but scholars are increasingly paying attention to how conservative politicians are challenging the monopoly of the left on gender equality. In this paper, I examine how news media narratives about the gendered effects of labour reforms introduced in Spain after the financial crisis of 2008 have been framed by actors across the political spectrum. Through an in-depth reading of newspaper articles addressing these contentious labour reforms in Spain’s two largest newspapers, El País and El Mundo, I find that similar discourses about the importance of female employment and of work-life reconciliation are used by both leftist and conservative actors to make opposing and incompatible claims about how the reforms impact women. Following the call by gender scholars working on party politics to take conservative gender perspectives seriously, rather than discrediting them as misguided or manipulative, I ask how and why these similar, yet incompatible claims can co-exist. I argue that the shared emphasis amongst Spanish politicians on the importance of female employment and work-life reconciliation in media discourse addressing the new labour reform, demonstrates how gender perspectives play a role in legitimating political opinions in policy areas that are not a priori gendered. Furthermore, I suggest that if we look beyond the shared interest in reconciliation and female labour force participation, we can identify differences in how the Spanish conservatives and social democrats gender the labour reforms, that reflect how ideological differences impact their understanding of gender equality.
