Fieldwork and research stay in Ethiopia

Nina Reiners, professor at the Faculty of Law and PROBONO principal investigator, was hosted for a one-week research stay at the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS). As part of her stay, she participated in the workshop “Critical Minerals, Energy and Conflict”, held on 8 June 2026 at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. The workshop was jointly organized by the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights at the University of Oslo and IPSS under the ARUA-Guild CoRE collaboration.

The event brought together researchers and practitioners on the complex relationship between natural resources, energy transitions, and conflict dynamics, with particular attention to the opportunities and challenges associated with critical minerals in contemporary global governance.

During the workshop, Nina’s presentation focused on the role of global private law firms in shaping environmental governance through pro bono legal assistance. Using the establishment of Ethiopia’s intended green court as a case study, she drew attention to the ways commercial legal actors can shape the legal frameworks governing natural resource conflicts and environmental adjudication.

PROBONO’s fieldwork in Ethiopia further included interviews with government officials, environmental defenders, and members of Ethiopia's legal sector.
