She has among other things engaged with political anthropology, critical urban theory, and post-colonial studies. She holds expertise in empirically driven studies, from statehood in eastern DR Congo to policing hate crime in the Norway, that serve theoretically broader interests. Solhjell holds a long track record of research collaborations, both South and North, and is contributing to the JUST EXPORTS project led by Kjersti Lohne.
