The Criminology of Humanitarianism Research Network

The network examined crime, control and social harm in humanitarian contexts.

About the network

The network Criminology of humanitarianism (CRIMHUM) sought to extend criminology to changing global dynamics by analysing humanitarian governance, actors and practices in the Global South. The network emphasised that humanitarian actors – NGOs, state bodies and UN personnel – can be agents of power and governance, and thus legitimate subjects of criminological inquiry. Its approach was informed by post colonial perspectives and attention to historical trajectories.

Activities

The network brought together international scholars to investigate the discourses and practices of humanitarian actors. Although the network is no longer active, it helped to strengthen the research community.

CRIMHUM projects:

  • Intermediaries of Justice
  • (In)security and humanitarian aid in Haiti
