About the project

The project is an analysis of the National Police Immigration Service (PU) – the Norwegian police unit responsible for identification of foreigners, registration of asylum seekers, deportation of foreign nationals and for the management of a detention centre near Oslo airport.

The project aims to give insight into the practical impact of immigration control objectives in the national and local contexts of policing. It shall map the variety of tasks and forms of contact that police authorities direct specifically at foreigners (such as identification, registration, deportation, etc.). The findings from the study will be compared to findings from other studies of police culture in order to map the differences and convergences between the nature of policing citizen and non-citizen populations. In particular, attention will be directed at how notions of risk, danger and suspicion are constituted in the interactions between the police and immigrant populations.

The project is conducted by Sigmund Book Mohn

Cooperation

In fall 2012 the project will organise a joint seminar with the National Police University College in Oslo on immigrant-police relations: 'Crimmigration control and trust in the police'.

Funding

This PhD project is a sub-project of Crime Control in the Borderlands of Europe funded by the European Research Council (ERC).
