The 'Current Issues in Human Rights Research' Lecture Series
The Norwegian Centre for Human Rights invites leading academics from across the globe to give presentations on their cutting edge research within the field of human rights. The aim of the lecture series is to explore human rights research from several viewpoints and disciplines.
About the Lecture
This lecture addresses the next frontier in global value chain regulation, focusing on forced labor import bans. In the current era of geopolitics, law has become the main language of globalization, where interdependence is viewed as a source of power. While the US has had forced labor import ban regulation since 1930, these bans were dormant at the start of the 21st century. But in 2016, the US suddenly slammed certain Chinese companies with bans. The US also required its neighbors to adopt similar forced labor import ban regulations under the Canada-Mexico-US Agreement (2018), marking an unprecedented development in transnational labor governance. The EU finalized a similar regulation in November 2023. This development is poised to reshape the regulatory landscape by complementing transparency and due diligence regulations addressing human rights in business. This lecture will consider these developments from an international law perspective.
