About the Special Issue

This special issue contributes to establishing human rights and sustainable development as a field of enquiry, and aims to provide a cross-section of some of the research at the forefront of this field. The topics raised in this special issue were explored during an international conference on Human Rights and Sustainability in 2022, organized at the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights.

The issue comprises contributions from established and emerging scholars that explore the intersection of human rights and sustainability discourses  and the application of rights-based approaches to sustainable development. They show that currently there are two main trends in thinking about the relationship between human rights and sustainable development. The first is a ‘harmonious’ understanding of human rights and sustainable development, that seeks to find the interlinkages and commonalities which strengthen both. The second is a ‘creative tension’ understanding, that highlights how the concepts challenge each other’s underlying assumptions. The articles in this special issue cover how these approaches are theorized, and take up the challenge of how they might apply in practice from different national perspectives, thus illustrating the richness and diversity of contexts in which the challenges of integrating sustainable development and human rights arise.
