Human Rights in Middle Eastern Family Legislation

In several Middle Eastern countries, personal status issues such as marriage, child custody, and inheritance are adjudicated by distinct family courts aligned with different religious groups. The NCHR is collaborating with local partners to enhance human rights standards within these Middle Eastern family courts.

Since 2022, we have collaborated with the Lebanese Foundation for Permanent Civil Peace (LFPCP) to raise awareness among judges and lawyers regarding Lebanon’s human rights obligations, and to foster enhanced trust and collaboration among stakeholders from the different courts, as well as to facilitate meeting points with civil society, academia and parliamentarians.

The project has already seen important results, with a roadmap for human rights, endorsed by the heads of the six largest religious courts in Lebanon, as the most prominent one.

Starting in 2025, the NCHR will extend its project initiatives to Jordan, whose legislative framework shares similarities with Lebanon's. Additionally, we have established a regional branch of the project to facilitate cross-border experience sharing.
