The current model of development is anything but sustainable. Apart from breaching the planetary boundaries, it is leaving behind – by design – too many people. Moreover, despite the rhetoric, people are hardly central to “people-centred” development. A shift is therefore needed in how we conceptualise and approach development. In this talk, Prof Deva will propose that states, UN entities, development partners, businesses, civil society organisations and academia should embrace a model of “planet-centred participatory” development. He will argue that the right to development provides a sound normative foundation for such a transformative model which achieves inclusive, sustainable and participatory development.
