War has returned to Europe and changes the ways in which the European Union interacts with the continent. Enlargement talks have been reinvigorated, even if full EU membership is unlikely to happen soon for several candidates. And while accession is not on the cards for other European states, their cooperation with the EU has been increasing. Against that backdrop, the workshop reflects on how the EU connects with Wider Europe, the geographical area that is broader than, although encompassing the space governed by EU (pre-)membership law. We wish to investigate how the EU legal order influences its European partners, and how in turn the latter’s interactions with the Union affect EU law itself.
