Thomas Ugelvik is interested in penology, broadly conceived, including the practical execution of punishment, the subjective experience of punishment, and the aftereffects of punishment. He is currently involved in two different research projects: The ORES project, which is a study of prison release and re-entry into society in Norway, and the PRISONHEALTH project which studies healthcare service delivery in prison and the idea that prisons can be ‘healthy institutions’.

Background

Ugelvik has been a Professor of Criminology since 2017. His PhD thesis (2010) was a study of the everyday life in Oslo prison with a particular focus on staff-prisoner relationships and the interweaving of power and resistance. He was a Visiting Scholar at the Prisons Research Centre at the University of Cambridge in 2012.

Ugelvik is founding Editor-in-Chief (with Professors Yvonne Jewkes and Ben Crewe) of the journal Incarceration: An International Journal of Imprisonment, Detention and Coercive Confinement (first volume 2020) and the book series Palgrave Studies in Prisons and Penology. His research has been published by journals such as The British Journal of CriminologyCrime, Media, Culture; EthnographyEuropean journal of Criminology; Theoretical Criminology; Punishment and Society and Qualitative Inquiry. He is a member of the National Committee for Research Ethics in the Social Sciences and the Humanities (NESH).
