Thematic group on studies of punishment

This group focuses on the function and execution of punishment by the state, and punishment in practice.

About the group

The study of punishment has a long tradition amongst researchers and students from diverse academic fields at the Faculty of Law. We live simultaneously in a period of significant and ongoing change within the field of punishment, and increased societal focus on punishment.

Punishment and incarceration have often been taken to be one and the same, a trend likely to continue into the future. However, this group wishes to also include perspectives on alternative methods of punishment, such as non-custodial sentencing, penalties for young offenders, electronic monitoring, financial penalties and fines.

Ambitions

This thematic group aims to consolidate and strengthen the Faculty’s research on the execution of punishment. The group also contributes to the ongoing growth and development of the research field within Norway.

Duration

The group is active for 3 years from 1 August 2022.
