About the Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law

The Institute is internationally renowned for its expertise in Maritime, Offshore, Petroleum and Energy Law. Faculty’s Centre for European Law is a part of the Institute. It also hosts research groups in Natural Resources Law and International Law of Contract.

The Institute is located in Domus Media, Karl Johans gate 47. The reception, located in the east wing, is open work days from 9 a.m. to 17 p.m.

We offer an LLM in Maritime Law and different courses in English.

It is possible to stay at the institute as a guest researcher for a short or long term; our staff publishes articles and books in English. See Publications.

We arrange seminars in English and our staff participates in seminars and projects world wide.

The professional sphere with the employees range from maritime law (transport) and insurance law, to petroleum and energy law. See Research areas.

Our libraries are frequented by scholars from abroad. Visit our libraries in Petroleum and European Law in Domus Media. The Maritime Law Library is now placed in the Law Library in Domus Biblioteca. Contact: Inger M Hamre.

The Institute was established in 1963. Organisationally we are connected to both the University of Oslo and the Nordic Council of Ministers.
