Dr. Yiwei Lyu is an Associate Professor from Nankai University Law School in China. She is currently in the process of completing her research which details the relationship between neoliberalism and human rights, placing particular emphasis on economic, social, and cultural rights. Dr. Lyu’s stay at NCHR as a visiting scholar is a result of the long-term collaboration between NCHR and Nankai university Law School and provides an opportunity for closer engagement.

Dr. Lyu’s presentation gave a very insightful and thought-provoking discussion on the current human rights framework and its ability to address socioeconomic inequalities.
The presentation provided a thorough analysis of economic, social and cultural rights (ESC), while also questioning the influence that neoliberalism has over its potential to be realized among more egalitarian lines. Dr. Lyu highlighted some of the shortcomings of the current human rights framework in addressing problems of inequality.

The research project will undoubtedly contribute to a better understanding of the current human rights framework and provide new perspectives on the realization of ESC rights.
