First time in the Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competition

Each year, the Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competition brings together university students from all over the world to argue a hypothetical human rights case. In 2020, the University of Oslo (UiO), through the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights (NCHR), participated in the Competition for the first time.

UiO was represented by a team comprised of Carlos J. Calleja Ahmad and Eduardo Sánchez Madrigal, and coached by NCHR’s Head of Department, Gentian Zyberi. Both Carlos and Eduardo are second-year students at the Theory and Practice of Human Rights master’s programme and work as research assistants at the Department of Private Law and NCHR respectively.

UiO selected to preliminary rounds

Over the course of several months, the students prepared memorials based on a case dealing with a wide variety of human rights issues and received constant training from their coach. UiO was among the ten universities from the ‘Western Europe & Others’ regional group selected for the preliminary rounds of the Competition, in which each team was able to argue their case once for the applicant and once for the respondent before a panel of experts.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the oral arguments were heard online from 19-24 September 2020. Despite the difficult circumstances caused by the pandemic, the organizers should be praised for their dedication and hard work to ensure that the competition proceeded smoothly.

This experience has paved the way for new generations of students who wish to participate in future editions of the Competition.
