Sustainable Circular Economy

Sustainable Circular Economy concentrates on research concerning the transition towards a circular economy that is both ecologically viable (mitigating pressures on the planetary boundaries) and socially just (securing social foundations). Accordingly, Sustainable Circular Economy concerns research in sustainable production and consumption, sustainable business models and repair policies.

The theme of Sustainable Circular Economy engages in particular with the EU’s Action Plan for a Circular Economy of 2020 and the Sustainable Product Policy Initiative of 2022. Areas encompassed in the research include in particular Ecodesign, public procurement, waste management, Intellectual Property Rights (including innovation), consumer law, marketing law and competition law. Many of these research areas relate to the themes of Sustainable Business and Sustainable Finance. In addition, Sustainable Circular Economy investigates the contributions of various national legislations, in the Nordics and EU member states, to the sustainable circular transition.

The theme participates in projects concerning sustainable circular business models (in cooperation with Futuring Nordics), maintenance and repair as energy conservation strategies (in cooperation with the UiO:Energy research group Circular Energy), the development of an encompassing long-term strategy on sustainable batteries (EMPOWER), and sustainable circular value chains for handling plastics in the fisheries and aquaculture sector (SHIFT-PLASTICS).
