Bakgrunn

Peter Scharff Smith har en mastergrad i samfunnsvitenskap og historie fra Roskilde Universitet (1998). Hans tidlige forskning fokuserte på danskenes samarbeid med nazistene under andre verdenskrig. Som student var han medforfatter på to monografier, blant annet “Under hagekors og Dannebrog. Danskere i Waffen-SS 1940-45” (1998).

Han tok doktorgrad ved Universitetet i København, og leverte en avhandling som omhandlet fengselshistorie og utviklingen av den moderne fengselsvesenet (“Moralske hospitaler. Det moderne fængselsvæsens gennembrud 1770-1870”).

Smiths forskning har vært innenfor det kriminologiske, rettssosiologiske og historiske felt, og han har vært tilknyttet Danish Institute for Human Rights, Universitetet i København, Cambridge University, New York University, det danske nasjonalarkivet, Roskilde universitet og Forsvarsakademiet. Han har også jobbet som forskningsdirektør ved Danish Institute for Human Rights. Han har nylig utgitt:
