The Palm Oil Industry and Human Rights

NCHR and the Jakarta-based Institute for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (EI) has conducted several studies on the Indonesian oil palm Industry. A characteristic feature of all these studies has been a strong focus on the social, economic and cultural rights of workers and affected communities.

Studies

  • The Palm Oil Industry and Human Rights: A Case Study on Palm Oil Corporations in Central Kalimantan (2015), is based on interviews with indigenous (Dayak) communities, migrant communities, plantation workers, and companies, in Central Kalimantan province.
  • Privatisasi Transmigrasi dan Kemitraan Plasma Menopang Industri Sawit (2017) focuses on state lead internal migration programs linked to oil palm development, and on cooperation schemes between companies and tied smallholders.
  • Dalam Perangkap Sistem Monokultur Industri Perkebunan Sawit (2021) focuses on village smallholders, factors that influence the choice of crops for cultivation, and links with plantations.

The above-mentioned studies have been used as basis for a range of discussions, trainings and policy suggestions at local, district, provincial and national level.
