Nora Milch Johnsen

Academic interests
My academic interests include refugee protection and human rights, particularly in the Middle East. Focusing on Lebanon, my master’s thesis studied refugee legal aid provided by humanitarian organisations in refugees in countries that do not have any refugee-specific legislation and where rule of law is largely absent. As a master’s student I was affiliated with the REF-ARAB research project and I received support to conduct field research in Lebanon for my thesis.
In my current position as a research assistant the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights, I will be working on the BEYOND, REF-ARAB and ASILE research projects exploring refugee protection in States not party to the 1951 Refugee Convention.
Background
I hold a M.Phil degree in Theory and Practice of Human Rights from University of Oslo (2020) as well as a bachelor’s degree in Political Science (2016) from the same university. As part of my bachelor’s degree, I conducted a semester abroad at Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, Argentina in 2014.
In 2017, I held a 6 months research internship at the American University of Beirut. I have also held internships with the Norwegian Refugee Council in Oslo (2019) and the Lebanese human rights organisation Alef in 2017.
